Abstract

1524686 Thermal switches RANCO Inc 25 Sept 1975 [30 Sept 1974] 39255/75 Heading H1N A thermal switch comprises a movable contact 82 supported on a resilient blade 84 for movement relative to a fixed contact 80 and a thermally responsive snap acting diaphragm 92 for moving the blade 84 via a lever 110 which has a part cylindrical bearing surface 140 engaging a corresponding surface formed in the wall of the switch housing. In one embodiment, the fixed contact 80 is connected to a U-shaped member 30 having one of its legs extending from the housing 26 of the switch to define one terminal 78 and the resilient blade 84 is riveted to a similar U-shaped member 28 defining another terminal. The diaphragm 92 comprises a snap acting disc forming part of a fluid chamber 88 connected to a capillary tube 94 which leads to the appliance whose temperature is to be sensed. Above a predetermined temperature, the diaphragm 92 moves with a snap action to pivot the lever 110 about a hinge axis 148 which in turn deflects the blade 84 away from the fixed contact 80. The blade 84 can only be moved back into the closed switch position by a reset pin 160 which acts on the blade 84 via a leaf spring 162 riveted to the terminal 28. The diaphragm 92 is snapped back to its initial position by the lever 110 when the blade 84 is moved by the reset pin 160 to the closed position which can only occur if the temperature of the appliance is below the predetermined level. The portion 122 of the lever 110 which engages the blade 84 wears away by sliding along the blade 84 during opening and closing of the contacts 80, 82 so as to compensate for the normal erosion of the contacts 80, 82 thereby preventing a change in operating temperature of the switch. In another embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) the reset pin 160 is omitted and the diaphragm 92 snaps back to its initial position when the temperature falls below the predetermined level.
