Abstract

1523263 Foetal scalp electrode A W SHOWELL (SURGICRAFT) Ltd and J COPELAND 9 Feb 1977 05417/77 Heading A5R A foetal scalp electrode comprises a tubular torsional spring member 3 secured at one end to an electrical connector (1), Fig. 1 (not shown) and at the other end to a head member 2 of electrically insulating material, and a central electrically conductive wire 6 extending axially through member 3 from a terminal in the connector 1 to a cavity 9 in the head member 2 where the wire is provided with an electrically conductive arcuate needle 10 on an electrically conductive arm 11 extending radially from the wire 6, needle 10 normally being urged by the torsion in spring member 3 out of the cavity 9 through a hole (12), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), with the needle point looping back to a flat surface 13 on the outside of head 2 and the point re-entering the cavity 9 via a second hole (14), a concave surface 15 on the outside of the head 2 facing oppositely to surface 13. Rotation of spring member 3 relative to the head 2 withdraws the needle 10 into the cavity 9, whereupon the flat surface 13 is placed against the foetal scalp and the member 3 released so that needle 10 loops through the foetal scalp. Contact with the mother is made by means of the connector (1) and either an exposed part, adjacent head 2, of a conductive helical spring forming the member 3, or a conductive wire outside a tube of plastics material forming the member 3.
