Abstract

1520108 Crop shredders JOHN WILDER Ltd 25 Sept 1975 [25 Sept 1974] 41718/74 Heading A4C [Also in Division A1] A flail-type crop shredder, similar to that shown in Specification 816421, in which straw, or other crop, is picked up by rotating flails 18 and chopped between three flails 18 and two sets of fixed and spaced apart interceptor blades 21, 22 provided on a housing 23, has an opening 25 in the housing, between the first and second sets of fixed blades, so that large fragments of crop and also dirt can go out of the housing without passing through the second set of blades. The crop exiting through the opening is picked up by the next pair of the flails, as the shredder advances. This arrangement helps to ensure that the crop is finely chopped and prevent dirt and mud from clogging the shredder. Four sets of flails 18 are pivotally mounted on transverse bars 17 carried on stub shafts 16 which extend radially from a rotor 15. Fan blades 36 arranged to generate a radial or axial air current may be mounted on the bars 17 so as to separate the flails 18. A deflector tray in the form of a hood 27 may be pivotally mounted from the housing 23 to control the distribution of the chopped crop. The angle of the hood 27 is set by means of an hydraulic actuator 29 operable from the cab of a towing tractor. Fixed deflector plates arranged to spread the crop outwardly relative to the rear of the shredder are provided on the hood 27.
