1519865 Safety closures PLASPHARM (UK) Ltd 6 Oct 1976 [6 Oct 1975] 40770/75 Heading B8T In a container safety closure assembly of the kind wherein a screw cap can only be removed when a ring of the assembly is held to prevent rotation thereof with the cap in the unscrewing direction, the ring 4 is held against axial movement relative to container neck 2 by the cooperation of an annular rib 4a within an annular recess 3a and is prevented from rotation in the cap-applying direction by engagement between at least one pawl 6 on the ring with a tooth 11 on the container. The pawls 6 are resiliently deformable and flex to ride over teeth 11 when ring 4 is rotated in the cap-removal direction; more pawls than teeth are provided, e.g. eight of the former and four of the latter, so that should a pawl(s) be held in a hihgly deformed position, Fig. 3c (not shown) over an extended period, there will always be at least one pawl in a position to abut a tooth 11. As shown, teeth 11 are formed integrally with the container, but they may be formed on a separate element applied to the container. Ring 4 may be provided with circumferentially spaced slots to facilitate its application to a bottle neck and with one or more radially projecting ribs to increase friction between it and the screw cap. The bottle may be of glass, metal, plastics and the ring of plastics such as polyethylene or polypropylene.
