Abstract

1519232 Cutting optical fibres BICC Ltd 7 March 1977 [5 March 1976] 08969/76 Heading C1M A hand tool for cutting optical fibres to give a flat. radial end face comprises a table 20 having a curved surface, two pairs of jaws 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and 12, 12' disposed on opposite sides of the table so as to engage a fibre positioned between the jaws and stretch it across the curved surface, and cutting means 7 above table 20 to cut the fibre. Jaw parts 11,12 and table 20 are mounted on member 1, and jaw parts 11', 12' and cutting means 7 are mounted on members 3 and 2 respectively, members 2 and 3 being pivotally mounted on member 1 via pivots 4, 5. Pivotal movement of members 2 and 3 relative to member 1 is restricted by springs 29 and 26. In operation, a fibre is positioned across the table in 20 in slot 19; member 2 is depressed, so that spring 29 causes the jaws to engage and stretch the fibre; further depression of member 2 bringing the cutting means 7 into contact with the fibre.
