Abstract
1517364 Measuring capacitance UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 Sept 1976 [17 Sept 1975 16 Oct 19751 38191/75 Heading G1U The capacitative measurement system of Specification 1340703 is modified in that the capacitance capacitative transducer is compared to a fixed reference capacitor, instead of a comparison between the two variable capacitors of the earlier transducer. Preferably, the transducer retains the two variable capacitances these being connected in parallel in the unknown arm of the bridge network. The transducer may be as disclosed in the earlier patent, or two wires in a glass tube secured to the bottom of a stainless steel tube for liquid level measurement Fig. 4 (not shown). For measuring the height of the mercury column in a thermometer, the wires lie along opposite sides of the thermometer tube in a space enclosed by a PTFE sleeve Fig. 5 (not shown). In a further transducer, the capacitance is formed between an earthed body and a screened wire probe Fig. 7 (not shown) for thickness measurements. As illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown), the voltage applied to the variable capacitance arm may be varied in accordance with the measurement system output, to keep the charge on the capacitor constant thereby producing a linear relationship between the voltage and the plate spacing of the capacitor.
