Abstract

1517163 Amplifiers POST OFFICE 18 Sept 1975 [7 Aug 1974] 34852/74 Heading H3T A Class A push-pull amplifier with increased efficiency, comprises two amplifying devices 3, 4 having their input electrodes connected to input terminals 1, 2 respectively, and their output electrodes coupled by a load circuit 8, and means for controlling the total supply current for the devices to have a component proportional to the input signal after full wave rectification. Devices 3, 4 may be either transistors in common collector configuration, as shown, or transistors in common emitter configuration, Fig. I (not shown), or thermionic valves (not illustrated) in common anode or common cathode configuration. The controlling means may comprise a transistor 9 with its base receiving the signal after passing through a differential amplifier 12, a bridge rectifier 13, and a further amplifier 14. The rectified waveform, Fig. 3b (not shown), turns on transistor 9 during both positive and negative half-cycles of the signal waveform, Fig. 3a (not shown). A standing component of current may be provided either by a transistor 18, or by applying to the output terminal of bridge 13 which is normally connected to supply line 10 an additional D.C. bias established by at least one diode (25-27), Fig. 4 (not shown), which may be a Zener diode. In an alternative circuit for providing a standing component of current differential amplifier 12 is replaced by one (31) Fig. 5 (not shown), having its output balanced about a terminal which can receive a D.C. bias. Both full wave rectification of the signal and current control are effected by two transistors (29, 30) in parallel.
