Abstract
1516982 Variable compression ratio engines R T JONES 15 Sept 1975 [22 June 1974] 27832/74 Heading F1B In a reciprocating piston combustion engine a junkhead 10 is provided which is driven via a rocker 15 or cam-shaft pivoted on an eccentric bearing 13 which is linked to an engine throttle valve actuating member so that the compression ratio is varied with throttle valve opening during engine operation. The compression ratio is arranged to increase as the throttle valve opening is reduced. In Fig. 1 (not shown), a two stroke engine has an inlet port (23) controlled by a disc valve (22). Combustible mixture is induced through the port (23) by the piston 24 and is compressed during the piston's working stroke. After opening of exhaust ports 25, junkhead 10 is raised by the cam 20 to open the transfer ports 19 to admit compressed combustible mixture to the cylinder. The ports 19 are closed again after a short time and the mixture is compressed in the cylinder and is ignited just after TDC. The junkhead 10 continues to move down the cylinder after ignition to keep the combustion volume constant until maximum pressure and temperature of the burning gases is reached. The junkhead then remains stationary until after BDC when the exhaust ports are about to be closed. The cam 20 then makes the junkhead rise rapidly so that the depression created in the cylinder helps the flow of mixture through the transfer ports 19. In Fig. 8 the invention is applied to a radial cylinder two stroke engine, and in Fig. 9 is shown a four stroke engine in which both the piston 24 and junkhead 10 are situated inside a rotating sleeve valve 36 which has a port 38 to control both inlet port 23 and exhaust port 25. Instead of the full length rotating sleeve, a sleeve just long enough to cover the junkhead may be provided, driven from the top of the cylinder. The invention may be applied to side valve engines and to spark ignition or compression ignition engines.
