Broaching.-In a broaching-machine the chuck f for holding the broach is carried at one end of a reciprocating cylinder d having a piston e at its other end which reciprocates in a cylinder a attached to a baseplate b. The piston also slides over a centrally-disposed power-supply pipe g forming a fixed head for the reciprocating cylinder. Power to the main cylinder a and auxiliary cylinder d and the exhaust therefrom is controlled through a fourway cock j, which is automatically operated to cut off power at the end of the cutting-stroke through a rod l<1>, two-armed lever m<4>, stop m, and lever p in the chuck f, the return stroke being caused by further movement of the cock from the hand-lever l. The tool is also disengaged at the end of the cutting-stroke by the levers p depressing a sliding sleeve s<1> and, so allowing the jaws q<1> of the chuck to drop, whereupon springs r press them apart.
