Abstract
1513547 Pipe joints I G NIXON 16 May 1975 [17 May 1974] 21991/74 Heading F2G In a gas-tight joint, a seal 10 uniting two parts 12, 14 of a high temperature system is insulated from high temperature reactants of the system by the interpositioning of a cooling zone 6 wherein a cooling fluid is circulated to protect the seal. An insulating shroud assembly 6 providing an annular space wherein cooling fluid e.g. water is introduced may be formed integrally with a reactant conduit 14 and fixably or rotatably connected through a stuffing gland seal 10 to a supply vessel outlet 12 of fluid e.g. air; oxygen; hydro carboncarbon dioxide mixtures subsequently to be introduced into the system as a reactant may be used initially as the cooling medium. In an alternative embodiment, the seal has the form of a metal e.g. stainless steel bellows providing a flexible coupling between joined members and insulated as described from the reactants carried therein. The seals used on the various embodiments may be provided at a periphery with an auxiliary cooling means e.g. a water jacket or external cooling fins.
