Abstract

1512948 Fibrillatable laminates F M ASPIN 6 May 1975 [8 May 1974 21 Dec 1974] 20198/75 and 55351/74 Headings B5N and B5B In a process for treating films of fibrillatable plastics material e.g. polypropylene, at least two film layers 42, 44 which may be in the form of a flattened tube are passed through a pressure nip between two heated rollers 18, 20 each having annular grooves with lands there between in its periphery, the grooves in the respective rollers being accurately aligned, whilst the layers are heated to fusion temperature on the region of the lands to form the boundaries of elongate portions of increased cross-section compared with the original cross-section and which are at least partly hollow. In one embodiment, three film layers are used to produce elongate portions each having a partitioned hollow interior; in another embodiment, a series of wires is provided between two films so that each portion contains a wire. Fibrillation of the product may be effected by passing it through grooved heating rollers 24, 26 and godet rollers 30, 32, 34 to hot stretch and fibrillate the product into discrete strands.
