Abstract

1511687 Radio navigation; aerials HAZELTINE CORP 7 Aug 1975 [5 Nov 1974] 32974/75 Headings H4D and H4A The antenna system as described in Specification 1,425,143 is modified for use in a Doppler coded pattern navigation system wherein the frequency in only a selected portion of the radiated region is varied, the frequency in the at least one remaining portion of the region being constant and indicative of the sense of angular displacement with respect to the selected region. In use, a receiver situated for example in one of two off-axis portions may determine its position relative to the centre selected portion of the region, and on entering the latter portion may then make fine measurement as to its position as described in the above referred to Specification. In Fig. 1, the signal from source 18 and power divider 20 is fed via phase shifters 22a to 22e to feed horns 14a to 14i, but phase shifter 22a feeds, via power divider 24a, feed horns 14a, 14b, 14c and phase shifter 22e feeds via divider 24b feed horns 14g, 14h, 14i, so that only that portion of the radiation pattern illuminated by feed horns 14c to 14g produces frequency variation across its angular extent (see also Fig. 3, not shown). In another embodiment Fig. 2, an alternative antenna unit comprises a sectorial horn antenna 28 comprising parallel plates 30 and 32, and focusing lens 34, fed via feed means 14a to 14g which may be dipoles or radiating probes. The signal from phase shifter 22d only is split in power divider 24 and fed to ports 14d to 14g, for use in, for example, a glide slope navigation system wherein the desired glide slope is relatively high or low and therefore at one end of the angular region which the antenna irradiates. Transfer switches (36a, 36b, 36c) (Fig. 5, not shown) may be included in the feed circuit at points 16a to 16g whereby the non-frequency varying signal from divider 24 may be switched to a different set of feeds and hence the selected frequency varying portion may be moved to a different angular part of the irradiated region.
