Abstract
150,849. Abell, R. June 23, 1919. Valves; valve-gear.-Valve-mechanism particularly suitable for high-speed engines comprises a lift valve 20, opened and closed without the aid of springs by a cam 41 and forked lever 42, Fig. 4, and serving both for admission and exhaust. The valve-lever engages the flanges 48 of a castellated nut 49 which is adjustable on the valve stem and is secured by a cotter 50. Any suitable auxiliary valves may be employed to connect the passage 16 alternately with the inlet and exhaust conduits 25, 27; the drawings show a rotary cylindrical valve 30 driven at half the speed of the crank-shaft, and having a recess 31 adjacent to the passage 16 of each cylinder. The cams 41 are carried by the shaft of the rotary valve.
