1507651 Seals GARLOCK Inc 17 Jan 1977 [23 Feb 1976] 01709/77 Heading F2B A seal assembly comprises a number of lip type seal rings 2A, 2B, 2C &c. each having axially projecting elastically deformable retaining means 12, 16 extending in opposite axial directions from each seal body 2 whereby any number of the same (as shown) are different (Fig. 7, not shown) seal rings 2 may be assembled in interlocking engagement to form a composite, i.e. built-up seal unit assembly. As shown and in Fig. 7 (not shown) the interlocking retaining means 12, 16 are formed as annular dove-tail joints, whilst in Fig. 3 (not shown) the interlocking means are formed as interengaging annular ribs and recesses (48, 50 and 52). In Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown) dimples (66) and recesses (68), arranged on tapered annular surfaces, provide the interlocking means, the adjacent seal rings having interengaging locating keys (70, 72) to ensure correct location of the interlocking dimples and recesses during assembly of the seal unit. Each seal ring body 4 may be of nitrile elastomer, various fluoroelastomers and various fluorocarbon resins, especially filled P.T.F.E., and bonded to reinforcing means 20 which may be of metal such as steel or brass, or may be of plastic resin such as nylon or polycarbonate. As illustrated in Fig. 7 (not shown) the composite seal assembly may be built-up of different types of seal rings such that some seal lips (84) having garter springs (86) function to retain fluid whilst an outer seal lip 6 functions as a dirt and dust excluding means.
