1507319 Adjustable hospital beds HILLROM CO Inc 5 Aug 1975 [9 Aug 1974] 32718/75 Heading A4J [Also in Division G3] The mattress support of a hospital bed is adjustable in height and has knee and head portions which are raised and lowered by respective motors 11, 12 and 13 under the control of electronic logic circuitry which, in conjunction with the position of manually operated switches on control panels 19, 20, 21, determines the particular movement of the mattress support. The circuitry includes two position indicating switches which ensures that when the head portion is raised, the knee portion is raised by 15 degrees to the horizontal and that when the head portion is lowered, the knee portion is lowered only when the head portion is at or below 30 degrees. When the mattress is to be moved to one of the two Trendelenburg positions, the mattress support is first elevated to its highest point and that end of the support which is to be uppermost in the Trendelenburg position is engaged by a hook. Engagement of the hook is indicated to the logic circuitry which then causes reversal of the elevation motor and lowering of the other end of the support. A master control panel 17 is positioned at the foot end of the bed and includes three lockout switches which can be opened to immobilize the three motors and the switch for the Trendelenburg positions. The master control also includes a bed flat switch which is coupled to the logic circuitry to cause operation of all three motors to move the bed portions to a horizontal position when the bed flat switch is closed. Bed position indicators 16 in the form of switches indicate to the logic circuitry the limits of adjustment of the height of the mattress support and inclination of the knee and head portions.
