Abstract

1505526 Measuring stress electrically SIEMENS AG 20 May 1975 [20 May 1974] 21643/75 Heading G1N The axial stress K, Fig. 1, in a forked tie rod 1 supporting an element 4 by a pin 3, is measured by an extensible cylindrical bar 7 in an axial hole of the rod 1, carrying strain gauge resistors 12 at a reduced diameter section 8. The lower end of bar 7 is screwed into a metal screen 6 which is itself screwed into the tie rod 1, and their upper ends have flanges which are bolted together. The intervening space is filled with oil 5. Leads from the strain gauges 12 are taken from terminals 14 in a glass plate 15 and connected as a bridge network. The reduced section 8 may be made of stiffer material than the bar 7. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, the axial stress in a bolt 16 is measured by the axial bar 7, the upper end of which has a bore 17 leaving a thin-walled section 8, carrying the strain gauges 12 on its inner or outer face. The apparatus may be used to measure the force exerted by work rolls 28, 29, Fig. 4, on a moving strip 32.
