Abstract

1505243 Paper manufacture CPC (UNITED KINGDOM) Ltd 2 April 1975 [18 April 1974] 32025/77 Divided out of 1504876 Heading D2B [Also in Division C3] A method of making paper having improved strength and pigment retention comprises incorporating in the papermaking slurry or into the preformed web a starch dispersion having a solids content up to 2 wt. % in an amount to provide at least 0.1 wt. % starch on the total solids content of the papermaking slurry. The starch dispersion is modified by treatment with a monofunctional agent to introduce cationic groups and an excess of heating steam to prevent retrogradation (see Division C3). The papermaking slurry may include both cellulosic and non-cellulosic fibres e.g. polyamide, polyester, polyacrylic, asbestos, and glass fibres, and conventional papermaking additives.
