Abstract

1504853 Sizing composition; sizing paper ALLIED COLLOIDS Ltd 20 May 1975 [27 Feb 1974] 8777/74 Headings DIP and D2B [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] A paper sizing composition is an aqueous dispersion containing a ketene dimer and a cationic polymeric dispersion stabiliser of specified formula. The ketene dimer has the formula: wherein R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and each represents an alkyl radical of at least 12C, and may be derived from e.g. palmitic, stearic, oleic or myristic acid or a mixture thereof. The stabiliser contains at least 10% by weight of recurring units derived from monomers of the formula I: wherein R 3 , R 4 and R 5 which may be the same or different are H or alkyl (1-4C), R 6 is H or methyl, A is alkylene (1-4C) and X is an anion. The copolymer may contain free, primary or secondary amino groups. The stabiliser may have a Brookfield viscosity of 200-2,000cps. The dispersion may be a liquidliquid emulsion or a solid dispersed in a liquid. The compositions may be used to size paper internally e.g. in the form of 1% consistency bleached sulphate pulp containing 20% calcium carbonate or externally in the form of hand sheets prepared from such pulp. In examples, the compositions comprises a homogenised aqueous emulsion of a stearyl ketene dimer stabilised with (1) a polymer derived from di-isobutyl amino ethyl acrylate quaternised with dimethyl sulphate (viscosity 1300cps), (2) a copolymer containing free amino groups and obtained by copolymerising diethyl amino ethyl methacrylate quaternised with methyl chloride and N-methylol acrylamide (95:5 by weight) and modified by reaction with melamine and (3) a copolymer of diethyl amino ethyl methacrylate quaternised with methyl chloride and N-methylol acrylamide (10:90 by weight) modified by reaction with melamine (10:130.5 by weight).
