Abstract

1503027 Retreading tyres ITAL-RUBBER SRL 2 Dec 1975 [21 Jan 1975] 49535/75 Heading B7C A tread assembly for use in retreading a tyre comprises a premoulded tread 1, a perforated sheet 3 of vulcanizable bonding material containing an anti-scorching agent which prevents vulcanization below a temperature in the range 35‹ to 40‹ C., and a protective film 3a. The tread assembly is assembled in the apparatus of Fig. 2. The sheet 3 and superposed tread 1 are passed through a first pair of rollers 17 and then through a second pair of rollers 4, 5. The roller 5 has pointed projections 6 which perforate the sheet 3. The tread 1 and perforated sheet 3 are subsequently passed into vacuum chamber 7 to cause expulsion of any air located between the tread and the sheet, or in the perforations of the sheet. Before the tread and sheet leave the vacuum chamber, the protective film 3a is applied to the free surface of the sheet to prevent air from returning to the perforations of the sheet. In the retreading process using the tread assembly, the protective film 3a is first removed and then the tread 1 and sheet 3 are applied to the rasped surface 2a, Fig. 3, of the tyre 2. A protective casing 8 is positioned around the tyre, and the tyre is placed in a vulcanizing oven 12. The vulcanizing oven is provided with a pipe 15 for use in inflating the tyre, and with a pipe 13 for use in evacuating the interior of the protective casing. Vulcanization to vulcanize the sheet 3 is carried out at about 100‹ C. by pressurizing the oven with a heating fluid.
