1502822 Applying tapes to packages VEREENIGDE METAALVERPAKKING EN HECHTDRAAD INDUSTRIE BV MVM-ENDRA 27 March 1975 13046/75 Heading B8C A method of applying a tape around an object or stack of objects 10, Fig. 1, comprises passing a tape, consisting of two tapes 9 emanating from supply reels 6 and having their ends interconnected, about the stack 10 in U-shaped fashion; forcing towards one another the portions of the tapes extending between the supply reels and the stack; clamping each said tape portion at a given distance from the other tape portion at two places spaced apart by about twice said given distance in a direction normal to the stack; cutting one said tape portion midway between its clamping places; directing the tape ends thus formed towards the other tape portion; cutting the other tape portion midway between its clamping places; bending the thus formed tape ends against the first tape ends and joining them thereto; and releasing the clamped portions, so that the stack is surrounded by a closed tape, and a tape extends again between the supply reels. As described, a stack of objects 10 on a pallet 3 is pushed against tapes 9 extending between four pairs of supply reels 6. Once the position shown in Fig. 1 is reached tape strainers 8, Fig. 3, are advanced to force the tape portions together, and a stop member 13 carried by one strainer 8 is pivoted by a fixed cam 15 to a position between the ends of the two strainers 8 so that when the strainers are fully advanced the tape portions 9, Fig. 4, are clamped between clamping faces 17, and 20, on the strainers 8 and faces 22, 23, respectively, on the member 13. A piston 27 in one strainer 8 is then advanced to cause a knife 28 to sever one tape portion 9 and then to cause a member 25 to advance to bend the severed tape ends against faces 24 of the member 13, before the knife advances into a groove 31 to sever the other tape portion. A piston 29 then advances a member 30 which folds the second pair of severed tape ends against the first pair on the surfaces 24 and also forces back the member 25 which causes glue to pass from a cavity 33 via passages 32 on to the tape ends to secure them together in pairs. Heat may also be applied, or instead of glueing, welding or fusing may be effected. The member 30 is then retracted, and the strainers 8 withdrawn to leave a taped stack and a tape extending again between the supply reels 6.
