Abstract
1502553 Conducting-liquid switches J EFTHER and J DENISSELLE 23 April 1976 [13 May 1975 18 Feb 1976] 16483/76 Heading H1N A conducting-liquid switch comprises an elongate insulating container 1 divided into three compartments, of which one compartment, A, contains gas and an electrical resistor 4, another compartment, C, contains two electrodes 6 and 7 to be bridged by the conducting liquid when displaced consequent upon expansion of the gas in A when resistor 4 is energized, and an intermediate third compartment, B, acts as reservoir for the conducting liquid, compartment C communicating with compartment B by a channel 3a at the lowest part of C and the reservoir B communicating with A by a channel 2a arranged in its upper part so as to permit passage of gas but containing means such as a wick 9 to resist passage of the liquid conductor. As shown the container 1 is of glass, the liquid is mercury, and the resistor is a fine wire 4 supported in a zigzag fashion to embrace maximum gas. Compartments A and C are of equal volume which is four times the volume of B.
