Abstract

1502536 Asymmetric membranes IDEMITSU KOSAN CO Ltd 7 July 1976 [31 July 1975] 28219/76 Heading B5B Films of asymmetric cross-sectional structure are formed by feeding a starting solution for the film to an interface area of two liquid phases in a coagulation bath, the two liquid phases being immiscible and at least one of the two being capable of causing the film forming solution to gel. In modifications the starting solution may be fed to the lower liquid phase covered with a small amount of the upper liquid phase followed immediately by the remainder of the upper liquid phase or the starting solution may be added to the upper liquid phase wherein the bottom of the bath is covered with the lower liquid phase followed immediately by the remainder of the lower liquid. Polyacrylonitrile in DMSO is fed into the interface of ethyl acetate and water; "Spandex" (Registered Trade Mark) in DMA into p-xylene and hydrazine hydrate; grafted yeast protein and polyurethane copolymer in DMSO into hydrazine hydrate and toluene; cellulose triacetate in methyl acetate into butyl acetate and aqueous isopropanol; polycarbonate in dioxane into water and dichloromethane/isopropanol; styrenerubber block copolymer in THF into p-xylene and water; collagen in acetic acid (0À05% in water) into methyl acetate and 0À5% NaCl solution and polyamide in DMA into methylacetate and hydrazine hydrate. Films formed were stretched and heat set.
