Abstract

A preparation for the controlled release of an effective amount of a biologically active material to the environment is composed of an intimate mixture of an organic polymer and a biologically active material, for example a pesticide; the mixture releases the biologically active material to the environment by molecular diffusion through the polymer matrix at the surfaces exposed to the environment, and the polymer contains a sufficient amount of the biologically active material that, when the preparation is exposed to the environment, the biologically active material diffuses into the environment and the polymer subsequently loses its structural integrity at the surfaces which are exposed to the environment; this causes fresh surfaces of the preparation to be exposed to the environment, and an effective amount of more biologically active material is released over a substantial period. The preparation is particularly suitable for the long-term supply of effective amounts of pesticide to crop plants. Fig. 1 shows the release rate of the active substance in a preparation according to the invention (Graph b) and of a known preparation (Graph a). <IMAGE>
