Abstract

1501833 Purifying IC engine exhaust gas; controlling IC engines NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 4 March 1976 [6 March 1975 10 March 1975] 08658/76 Heading F1B [Also in Divisions B1 and F4] An I.C. engine exhaust purifying system comprises an afterburner and/or catalytic reactor 28 and a sensor 32 mounted downstream of the afterburner for emitting a signal representing the concentration of a given constituent in the exhaust gases from the device 28, which signal controls means regulating the composition of the exhaust gases passing to the device. The control means may provide a predetermined fuel air ratio to the engine 10 by means of an electric or electromagnetic valve 22 in the fuel supply to the mixture supply means 18 which is electronically controlled by a unit 24 connected to the sensor 32. In a modification, Figs. 4 to 6, (not shown), the electronically controlled valve may be situated in an air conduit 46 between an air filter 16 and the exhaust gas duct 26 upstream of the afterburner, to supply air into the exhaust system. A similar but supplementary air supply 40 comprising an air pump 44 in the conduit 46 may be provided which is controlled in response to the operation of the engine by means (not shown), acting to control a valve 48 in the conduit 46, and a check-valve 42 is mounted therein to prevent reflux of exhaust gases thereinto. A second, supplementary air supply means provides air from the air pump 44 to the fuel air duct downstream of the mixture supply means 18 through a check-valved conduit 49 when the degree of vacuum created in the fuel-air intake system is above a predetermined level. An exhaust gas recirculating system 54 having a valve 58 also reponsive to the degree of intake vacuum recycles some exhaust gases into the intake system from a point downstream of the afterburners. The ratio of air-fuel supplied to the engine is additionally controlled in accordance with engine operation and/or ambient conditions so as to maintain optimum exhaust gas temperatures for burning. Means to detect such factors comprise sensors responsive to rotation of the throttle valve, accelerator position, engine speed, coolant temperature, exhaust gas temperature, ambient air temperature, engine intake vacuum, intake air-flow, and fuel flow.
