Abstract

1501065 Electro-photographic developers EASTMAN KODAK CO 8 July 1976 [9 July 1975] 28463/76 Heading G2C A dry particulate electrostatic image toner powder consists of particles having a size from 0À1 to 100 Ám comprising a polymeric binder having a softening point in the range 40 to 200‹C, optionally a colourant, and containing from 0À01 to 2 wt. per cent with respect to the toner particles of a charge control agent having the Formula (I) in which R<1> to R<4>, which may represent the same or different groups, represent an aliphatic or aromatic group having up to 30 C atoms, providing that at least one of the groups R<1> to R<4> has the structure: in which R<6> is an alkyl group having 8 or more C atoms and R<7> is a straight chain alkylene group having up to 8 C atoms, R<5> is an aliphatic or aromatic group having up to 30 C atoms and n is 3 or 4. The charge control agent exemplified is (3- lauramidopropyl) trimethylammomium methyl sulphate. Polymeric binders are poly (styrene-comethyl methacrylate-co-ethylhexyl methacrylate), other styrene-containing resins, polycarbonates, rosin modified maleic alkyd resins, polyamides, phenol-formaldehyde resins, polyesters, and modified alkyd resins. The colourant may be Hansa Yellow, Nigrosine Spirit, Chromagen Black, Solvent Black, Fuchsine, Basic Blue or C black or mixtures of these. The toner powder is mixed with carrier particles which may be magnetic or non- magnetic. It is stated that the concentration of the charge control agent is greater at or near the surface of the particle than it is within its interior.
