Abstract

1500747 Sparking-plug; ignition system FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 22 Oct 1975 [26 Dec 1974] 43341/75 Heading F1B A sparking-plug comprises third electrode means 34 positioned intermediate a central electrode 30 and an earth electrode 28 within an air-gap, and high impedance coupling means electrically conductively connected to the third electrode means and arranged to provide an electrical high impedance between the third electrode means and a source of electrical energy associated with the plug. As shown there are two intermediate electrodes 34, 36 but the number of intermediate electrodes may be as large as space constraints permit. The high impedance coupling is achieved by connecting the intermediate electrodes 34, 36 with semi-cylindrical capacitive plate members 38, 40. Alternatively each of the intermediate electrodes could be capacitively coupled to the central electrode 30. The air-gaps could be arranged to deviate from the centre line of the plug 10. The spark-plug is able to generate sparks having greatly increased length without requiring the application of levels of energization in excess of those commonly encountered with single air-gap plugs.
