Abstract

1500534 Coating composition TSUKIHOSHI KASEI KK 13 March 1975 [26 Oct 1974 13 March 1974] 10566/75 Heading A2D A composition for the preservation of agricultural products comprises a dispersion of microparticles as a dispersoid of a hydrophobic substance in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble high polymer and a dispersing agent, the weight ratio of hydrophobic substance to high polymer being from 10:0.2 to 10:3, the composition being capable of application as a coating layer to cover the outer surface of an agricultural product and of being dried to form a coating membrane comprising the microparticle dispersed in a matrix of the membrane of the water - soluble high polymer which has been in aqueous solution and having fine continuous microvoids formed between the microparticles and the matrix, the membrane controllably suppressing the respiration of the agricultural product. The hydrophobic substance is a natural wax, vegetable fatty oil or a hydrogenated fatty or mineral oil. The water - soluble high polymer is a polysaccharide, a polysaccharide derivative, a protein, an alginate or a polyvinyl alcohol. The membrane preferably has a thickness of 3 to 100 microns, and the dispersed microparticles a size of from 0.1 to 10 microns. The agricultural product may be dipped into the dispersion or sprayed therewith. The treatment with the composition of various fruits, pulses, whole eggs and maize is exemplified.
