Abstract

150,015. Adams, S. H. April 22, 1919. Direct air, gas, and steam pressure apparatus, automatic and non-automatic. - A dredger is operated by moving the dredger body into contact with the material to be moved, filling the dredger body with mud or other deposits by gravity or suction, and discharging the contents by compressed air or steam. In the plant shown in Fig. 1, a pump s compresses air into a receiver a and exhausts air from a receiver b ; these receivers are connected by a pipe c having a threeway valve c to the dredger body d. The dredger body is provided with a valve k operated from a cylinder j by compressed air from the receiver a, with a discharge pipe o, a scoop p provided with a cutting blade, and with a grab q operated by a rod r. Water from a tank t is supplied under pressure to a jet z for loosening the material, and to a pipe y for driving the spoil up the discharge pipe o. In action the material enters the dredger body by gravity or assisted by suction from the receiver b, through the pipe c, the valve k is closed, the valve c is operated to direct compressed air from the receiver a to the dredger body, and the spoil is ejected through the discharge pipe o. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the sides of the dredger body are formed by grabs o which are opened to enclose the material, which is subsequently discharged by compressed air. The valve through which the material enters the dredger body may take the form of the flap valve shown in Fig. 9, in which metal plates b and d connected by metal strips e have pliable material c inserted between them to make an airtight joint between the valve and the face of the opening g. A concave disk f<1> is provided on the valve, against which is directed the stream of compressed air to force the valve on its seating. A guard or screen may be provided to prevent too large pieces entering the dredger body, and the valve controlling the compressed air supply may be automatically actuated by a float device and subjected to the rise of water therein when the dredger body is filling with the material.
