Abstract

Resinous or asphalt-like bodies are obtained by treating phenols with oxygen or gases containing oxygen under pressure. The process is preferably carried out with the phenols in aqueous solution or in presence of aqueous liquids; catalysts such as iron may be added. According to examples, carbolic acid or cresol dissolved in soda lye, or o-cresol mixed with dilute sulphuric acid, are treated with air at 40 atmospheres pressures at 200 DEG C. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the process may be applied to mixtures containing phenols, e.g. tars and tar oils. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
