Abstract
1499589 Reduction of nitrobenzene sulphonic acids IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 Dec 1976 [10 Dec 1975] 50644/75 Heading C2C Aminobenzene sulphonic acids corresponding to the nitrobenzene sulphonic acids of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 and R 4 are H, halogen or alkyl, or one of R 1 and R 2 may be OH, and R 3 is H, halogen or NO 2 ; are obtained therefrom by catalytic hydrogenation wherein the nitrobenzene sulphonic acid is introduced into a reduction chamber containing a catalyst and hydrogen under pressure at a rate substantially equal to that at which hydrogenation takes place. Preferred catalysts are the metals of Group VIII of Mendeleef's Periodic System, e.g. Co, Ni, Pt and Pd. Specified reaction conditions are 70‹ to 150‹ C. and pressures up to 600 p.s.i.g. The nitrobenzene sulphonic acid is preferably reduced in the form of an alkali metal salt.
