Abstract

1499329 Working stone HY-MAC Ltd 10 Sept 1975 [10 Sept 1974] 39440/74 Heading B5E Apparatus for breaking up a layer 11 of a substantially rigid material, such as concrete or masonry, comprises first and second rigid jaw members 1, 2, the first jaw member having at least one hook-like tooth 7, 8 and the second jaw member being pivoted on the first jaw member to permit the opening between the jaws to be closed on to the layer, and hydraulic ram means 4 mounted on the first member for pivoting of the second member to tend to close the opening, the first jaw member having mounting means 25, 28 such as to enable a torque due to forces required to insert the tooth under the layer to be transmitted through the mounting means. As described, the apparatus is mounted on the dipper 22 of an excavator and the first jaw member 1 has forwardly and rearwardly directed teeth 7, 8 which co-operate with respective bars 9, 10 on the second jaw member 2 which is movable about a pivot 3 on the first jaw member by an hydraulic ram 4 connected between pivots 5, 6. The mounting means connects the apparatus to pivots 25, 28 on the dipper 22 and bucket ram 26 of the excavator, the dipper being movable about a pivot 23 on a boom 20 by an hydraulic ram 24, and the boom being movable about a pivot on the excavator by an hydraulic ram 21. The ram 4 can be operated so that the layer to be broken is gripped between the tooth 8 and bar 10 of jaw member 2, as shown, or between the tooth 7 and bar 9 of jaw member 2. The breaking of the layer 11 may be effected by the operation of the ram 4 engaging the jaw members with the layer, or the ram 4 may merely position the jaws and the bending moment applied to the layer by operation of the bucket ram 26. Operation of the dipper ram 24 may assist in inserting the teeth 7 or 8 beneath the layer. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,391,786.
