Abstract
1498439 Printed circuit assemblies; resistors WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 27 April 1976 [3 June 1975] 24008/75 Headings H1R and HIS A cylindrical resistor (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) comprising an e.g. ceramic insulant body carrying a resistive film with end caps and leads is enclosed in a two part thermoplastic envelope contoured internally to fit the resistor and grooved to retain the leads. The discrete semicylindrical parts have mating edge surfaces with integral knife edge projections each contacting the opposed edge surfaces, and the assembly is subjected to ultrasonic energy and pressure to melt and collapse the projections whereby the two parts are hermetically welded together. Other similar projections may be provided within the internal grooves. An electronic circuit, e.g. printed, may be formed (Figs. 3, 4) on an insulant, e.g. ceramic, substrate 14 comprising resistors, capacitors, transistors and the like with terminal leads 15 extending therefrom. A two part envelope is defined by thermoplastic sections 16, 17 to accommodate the substrate, and have grooves 18 accommodating the leads 15, with engaging mating edge surfaces 19, 20 provided with integral knife edge projections 21, 22 engaging the opposed edge surfaces. After arrangement of sections 16, 17 adjacent the substrate, the assembly is subjected to ultrasonic energy and pressure to melt and collpase the projections and seal the two elements together into an integral envelope.
