Abstract
1497831 Burners HOWE-BAKER ENGS Inc 11 April 1975 15051/75 Heading F4T A burner assembly comprises an annular heat exchanger 18 in communication with inlet and outlet manifolds 30, 34, one wall 20 of the heat exchanger defining a combustion section whereby an atomizing medium is heated by heat transfer from the section through the wall, prior to introducing to an atomizing means, which imparts a high velocity tangential vortex to the atomizing medium, to react on the fuel so as to produce atomized fuel having substantially micron size droplets. A fuel atomizing device for use in the burner assembly comprises an atomizer head 44 with a fuel supply conduit 46, an atomizing medium plenum 68, a vortex cavity 86 and an ejector nozzle 48 surrounding the exit point of conduit 46, vortex generating means 84 being interposed between the plenum and the vortex cavity so that a high velocity vortex is imparted to the flow of atomizing medium, which vortex acts on the fuel at nozzle 44, and means 74 for diffusing the atomized fuel downstream of nozzle 44. In operation, steam or air atomizing medium flows from conduit 32 into conduit 42 via a manifold 30, a heat exchanger 18, a second manifold 34, a conduit 38, and a teepiece 40, liquid fuel flows through a conduit 46 and gaseous fuel flows from a conduit 56 and out through angled ports 54. The flow of the atomizing medium is divided at plenum 68 and flows through an annulus 70 and nozzles 72 in diffuser 74, and also through a tangential slot 82 in swirl plate 84 and it is mixed with the fuel. In a modification, the shape of the nozzle differs, Fig. 2A (not shown). In a further modification, the atomizing head does not include impingement nozzles or a diffuser, (Fig. 3 (not shown). The fuel may be naphtha, kerosene, carbon black oil or asphalt, or coal dust slurry. A pilot igniter 60, flame sensor 64, and a flame sensor viewing tube 62 are provided. The packing material 24 in the heat exchanger may be formed from ceramic or metallic balls.
