Abstract
1497214 Measuring visibility photoelectrically ASEA AB 7 April 1975 [8 April 1974] 14134/75 Heading G1A To measure visibility, radiation from a source is scanned across a set of angularly spaced reflectors placed at different distances from the source, and the reflected radiation is detected and thresholded to determine which reflectors are visible. In Fig. la radiation from source 10, e.g. a laser, is scanned over reflectors 11; the source includes a beamsplitter 14, Fig. 2a, so that reflected radiation can pass to a detector 15 via mirror 16, lens 17 and filter 18. The source 12 in Fig. 2 emits pulses under control of a clock 24 and a unit 23 which steps the optical transmitter/receiver unit 21 to perform the scan. When the unit 21 has been stepped to a position where it points towards one of the reflectors, a train of pulses is emitted by the source; the detector signal is also a series of pulses which are integrated and compared with a pre-set threshold at 19 to determine whether the reflector is visible or not. The number of the reflectors which are classified as visible is a measure of the visibility.
