Abstract

1496982 Charging batteries CARDIAC RECORDERS Ltd 12 July 1976 [11 July 1975] 29275/75 Heading H2H A method of charging a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery comprises charging the battery at a high rate for a predetermined period of time during which the total energy supplied to the battery is approximately half the total charge capacity of the battery, and then charging the battery at a low rate. The battery, which supplies a cardiac defibrillator, is connected to terminals 13 when the defibrillator is plugged into the charger. A magnet (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), in the defibrillator closes a reed switch SW1A, SW1B in the charger to connect a mains supply to the charger. Current is supplied to the battery via a transistor TR1 which limits the maximum open circuit voltage and a transistor TR2 of a constant current circuit. A timer, which includes a resistor R3, a capacitor C4 and a frequency divider IC, switches on a transistor TR3 after the predetermined period of three hours has elapsed, thereby connecting resistors R7, R8 in parallel and reducing the charging current.
