Abstract

1496682 Change speed gear P B BETTINSON & CO Ltd 27 March 1975 [11 April 1974] 16172/74 Heading F2D Transmission of power between members 21, 22 either of which may serve as the input member, is effected through a series of rotary elemerits interconnected to rotate together, e.g. intermeshed toothed wheels 11 to 17, and drive means 26, e.g. intermeshed toothed wheels 27, 28, which couples the member 21 with a selected one of the rotary elements. As shown, the wheel 27 is driven by the member 21 through a hexagonal shaft portion 32 and drives the output member 22 through the wheel 28, a hexagonal shaft 33, the wheel 12, wheels 13, 14, 15, and a hexagonal shaft 25. Different transmission ratios are obtainable by removing a pin 35 and partially withdrawing the drive means 26 to disengage the shaft 33 from the wheel 12 and then turning the drive means to engage the shaft 33 with another of the wheels 11 to 17. Further ratios may be obtained by removing the drive means 26 and replacing it with the positions of the wheels 27, 28 interchanged, or by replacing it with a different drive means. Also, the housing 10 for the wheels 11 to 17 may be partially withdrawn and turned to connect another of the wheels 11 to 17 with the member 22. The wheels 11 to 17 and 27, 28 are made of nylon &c. A modification employing sprockets and chains instead of intermeshed wheels is described, and further modifications using belts and friction wheels are referred to.
