Abstract
1496189 Taps; thread-forming fasteners LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Nov 1975 [6 Oct 1975 15 Nov 1974] 47350/75 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] An internal thread is formed in a bore, e.g. of a nut, using a tap 40, the thread being formed as a helical groove having a rounded crosssection, and the flat crest (24) (Fig. 2, not shown) of the thread being the remainder of the originally smooth cylindrical bore. The internally threaded member so formed is used with a bolt having a thread with the crests and roots of substantially uniform major and minor diameters, the major diameter of the bolt thread exceeding the major diameter N max of the internal thread and at least the crest of the bolt thread being of harder material than the root of the internal thread. When the bolt and internally threaded member are screwed together, the crest of the bolt thread swages the root portion of the internal thread to produce a good thread-to-thread engagement. The hardening of the crest of the bolt thread may be by electrode arc deposition of titanium carbide or tungsten carbide.
