Abstract
1495928 Treatment of sulphur containing scrub liquors PEABODY HOLMES Ltd 2 Dec 1974 [25 Oct 1973 29 Jan 1974 16 July 1974] 49703/73 04094/74 and 31380/74 Heading C1A Effluent aqueous alkali liquor containing sulphur compounds obtained in the removal of sulphur compounds contained in a gas stream by scrubbing with an aqueous alkali wash liquor is thermally treated in a combustion chamber under a reducing atmosphere to produce a gaseous combustion product comprising hydrogen sulphide having finely divided particulate matter entrained therein which is quenched by passing through a scrubber to allow the particulate matter to pass into aqueous solution and form an alkali liquor suitable for recycle to the gas scrubbing circuit; the effluent liquor being concentrated prior to the thermal treatment by direct contact with the combustion product. The process is described as being used to treat the waste liquor obtained in a process for the removal of H 2 S and HCN from a gaseous medium in which process the H 2 S is oxidized in the scrubbing liquor to sulphur and the hydrogen cyanide is removed from the gas stream by reaction with a polysulphide in an aqueous alkali liquor to form a thiocyanate the solution then being treated as described above to form an aqueous alkali solution which is made up with polysulphide before being re-used in the gas scrubbing step. The evaporation, combustion and thermal treatment may be carried out in the same reaction vessel, the combustion products and evaporated vapour being combined and passed together into the scrubber.
