Abstract
1495696 Heat transfer devices; water heating N H SCURRAH 26 Nov 1974 [27 Nov 1973] 55048/73 Headings F4U F4A and F4S A heating apparatus comprises a heat pipe or Perkins tube 12 having means within the pipe or tube 16 for assisting transport of condensed vapour from a cooler to a warmer portion one portion 13 of the pipe being located in a source of heat which may be flue gases from the boiler of a central heating system and the other 15 in a medium to be heated. The pipe 16 is in sealing engagement with the wall of an aperture of a member 10 separating the heat source and medium to be heated and is supported by the member. Heat collecting and dissipating fins 17, 18 and a thermally insulated jacket 19 may be fitted about the pipe 16. In one embodiment, the gases in a flue 30, Fig. 3, contact vertical heat pipes 35, the upper ends of which pass through a horizontal upper wall 31 into a water jacket 34 for heating water to be used in a central heating system. Control of the flue gas may be achieved by thermostatically controlling the speed of rotation of a fan 36 in the chimney. In a modification, the combustion chamber of a hot water boiler has a lattice work arrangement of horizontal thermosyphons and vertical heat pipes extending into a surrounding water jacket. Various applications of the apparatus are described, e.g. to cooking utensils, oil-filled radiators, vehicle heaters and firebricks.
