Abstract

1495341 Automatic exchange systems SIEMENS AG 10 March 1975 [21 March 1974] 9841/75 Heading H4K In a non-hierarchical network of telephone exchanges a selected channel of a group of speech channels coupling two of said exchanges may be used as a data channel for the transmission of data and/or control information in both directions, said two exchanges having different priorities, the change of higher priority being arranged, if none of the speech channels is currently in use as a data channel, as soon as a speech channel becomes free to seize that channel as a data channel and transmit a data connection request thereon, the lower priority exchange being only able to use a channel seized by the higher priority exchange. The channels may be space, frequency or time division multiplex channels on lines, cables or radio links. The figure shows two exchanges A, B coupled by four channels N1-N4. Exchange A is also coupled to exchange D and exchange B is also coupled to exchanges C and E. The exchanges A and B have control units ZSTI and ZST2 respectively which control the networks K1 and K2 and modems M11 to M23 provided one per other exchange to which that exchange is coupled and selectively connectible to the connection circuit AS so that any modem may take over work from another defective modem.
