Abstract
1494668 Adding Ca to molten steel SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 June 1975 24298/75 Heading C7D Calcium is added to steel in containers made of iron, alumium, copper, organic material or fireproof paper in the form of metallic Ca, or Caalloys i.e. Ca-Si, Ca-Si-Ba, by plunging the container into steel at 1480-1800‹C, the steel having been pre-treated to have a S content of less than 100 ppm and a total oxygen content of 100 ppm max. Ca is added to the steel at 0À1-2 kg/ton to maintain a Ca:S ratio of 0À05 to 0À8. A suitable steel may contain C 0À02-0À55% Si less than 0À5% Mn 0À2-2À50 with incidental ingredients and one or more alloying elements, and is preferably Al-killed and further vacuum degassed. Ca may alternatively be added in wire form, the Ca-containing additive being within a hollow cylindrical shell.
