Abstract

1494546 Resin-impregnated cellulosic fibres BUCKEYE CELLULOSE CORP 20 March 1975 11599/75 Heading D2W A process for the production of cellulosic fibres internally impregnated with a wet strength resin comprises forming an aqueous slurry of swellable cellulosic fibres at a first pH at which the fibres are swollen, mixing a wet strength resin into the slurry, reducing the pH of the slurry to a second pH at which the fibres contract and the resin can be cured, dewatering the slurry and substantially separating the fibres from each other, drying the fibres and curing the resin while the fibres are separated. The cellulosic fibres may be derived from wood or cotton. The wet strength resin may be a urea-formaldehyde, melamine - formaldehyde, polyamide - polyamine - epichlorohydrin, polyethyleneimino, or cationic dialdehyde starch resin. Total mixing time may range from 45 min. to 16 hours. Reduction of pH may be effected by addition of dilute H 2 SO 4 , HCl, or an organic acid e.g. acetic acid or salt thereof. Dewatering may be effected on a Fourdrinier wire, preferably to a fibre consistency of 50-55%, the resulting sheet being uncompacted but partially dried. The fibres may be separated by means of a rotating wire brush or by a wet pulp fluffer. The separated fibres are then heated to cure the resin and are dried using conventional conditions. Any fibrous bundles present may be separated by reslurrying the fibres screening and drying. The cellulosic wetstrength resin impregnated fibres are characterised by having a twisted ribbon fibre form, are substantially incapable of forming hydrogen bonds, have a cupriethylenediamine insolubility of at least 80% are refinable, and promote increased bulk wicking rates in fibrous structures. The resin-impregnated fibres may be used in the following applications:-absorption of liquids, filtration of fluids, cushioning, insulation and bulking.
