Abstract

1494454 2-Pyrrolidones STAMICARBON BV 23 Feb 1976 [5 March 1975] 07045/76 Heading C2C A 2-pyrrolidone is prepared by hydrogenating succinonitrile or a substituted succinonitrile in the liquid phase in the presence of ammonia at a hydrogen partial pressure of 1 to 50 atmospheres, and hydrolysing the resulting product with water. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out at a substantially constant hydrogen partial pressure and in the presence of a water-immiscible solvent. The substituted succinonitrile is preferably substituted with a C 1 to C 4 alkyl group or groups in the 2- and/or 3-positions.
