Abstract
1494379 Wooden railway sleepers AKA DEMIA ROLNICZA 9 Dec 1975 [17 Dec 1974] 50343/75 Heading E1G A wooden railway sleeper 1 is provided in each rail-mounting zone thereof with at least one insert 2 of material harder than the wood of the sleeper and improving the compressive strength of the sleeper in places where anticipated loads may exceed the strength of the wood. The insert may be made of hard wood, wood impregnated with plastics material or plastics material. The insert is wedge shaped in cross-section and is fitted in a complementarily-shaped groove or recess in the sleeper running transversely to the longitudinal centre line of the sleeper in order to redirect pressure applied from above from perpendicular to diagonal or parallel relative to the wood grains in the sleeper. In order to prevent lengthwise cracking of the sleeper, the crosssectional dimensions of the wedge-shaped insert may be greater at its ends than in its middle portion, both widthwise and depthwise as shown in Figs. 7-9.
