Abstract

Hoods.-An automobile comprises a rigid detachable roof, side windows and panels which can be detached so as to leave an unobstructed space on each side between the body and the roof, and curtains or other collapsible means for closing these side spaces when the windows and panels are removed. The roof comprises an horizontal contour member 20 supported by the windscreen uprights 16 and by a back part 23 which may be a permanent part of the roof structure, or may be formed independently thereof. The part 23 is bolted to the body at 25. Arched ribs 21 extending from the member 20 support the roof covering 45. Rails 35 attached to the member 20 serve to reinforce the roof and also provide a member to which the detachable windows and panels 30, 31 can be bolted, as at 39. The windows and panels and the door extensions 32 are provided with plates 52, Fig. 9, for bolting them to the body 10 and doors 11, 12. The windows and panels 30, 31, 32 are removed for summer use of the car, and curtains 40 are provided for closing the sides against the entry of rain. The curtains 40 are supported from guide-wires 41 and, when not required, the sections thereof are folded one on the other accordion-fashion to the front end of the vehicle, and the curtains and wires are then attached by straps to the door 46 of a depository 43 in which the curtains are disposed upon closing the door.
