Abstract

1493727 Method for making a yarn package ATLANTIC GUMMED PAPER CORP 27 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 27375/75 Headings B8M and B8C A yarn package comprises a hollow cake of yarn 10 which is formed by winding successive layers of yarn upon a removable forming tube 12, peel-away adhesive means such as double pressure-sensitive tapes 36 (four such tapes are used in this embodiment) attached to the outer layers of the cake 10, a plastics cover 48 heatshrunk to provide a snug-fit on the cake 10, the tapes 36 releasably bonding the outer layers of yarn of the cake 10 to the interior surface of the cover 48 to prevent collapse of the residual portion of the yarn cake 10 as yarn turns in the outermost layers of the cake 10 are withdrawn, and protective bumper rings 38, 54 disposed at the ends of the cake 10 to form protective covers for the ends. The leading and the trailing ends 26, 28 of the cake 10 are located adjacent one of its ends and are connected to the exterior surface of the cover 48 as at 50, 52 by means of tapes for ready accessibility for yarn withdrawal. The cake 10 may have frustoconical end sections 16, 18 which are nested in complementarily shaped bumper rings 38, 54. The adhesive tapes 36 may be replaced by adhesives lightly sprayed on the exterior of the cake surface. The bumper ring 38 over which the cover 48 is heat-shrunk is moulded from foamed plastics such as polystyrene. Both the rings may be placed after the plastics cover 48 has been heat-shrunk over the cake 10. The ring may be replaced by a foamed plastics tray provided with a plurality of nesting holes for the cakes 10. The rings may have different shapes. The rings or trays may be designed with opposed nesting surfaces for nesting ends of different cakes. The trailing end 28 of one cake may be bonded to the leading end of another cake for a continuous yarn withdrawal. The cakes may have different shapes, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). In another embodiment a pair of cakes (10a), (10b) are supported with their axes oblique to each other ensuring that the feeding of yarn through an eyelet (56), when the supply shifts from cake (10a) to (10b) does not produce a snarl or tangle, Fig. 8 (not shown).
