Abstract

1493242 Polyurethane foams W R GRACE & CO 4 May 1976 [5 May 1975] 18189/76 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] A process for coating a fabric comprises spreading a composition comprising a polyamine, e.g. an aliphatic diamine or triamine, carbamate and a liquid, free isocyanate group containing reaction product of a polyisocyanate with a polyhydroxy compound, e.g. a polyether polyol, on to a release surface; heating the coating to liberate carbon dioxide and polyamine from the carbamate and to cause gelling and partial foaming; placing the fabric over the gelled coating; heating the coated fabric to complete the foaming and cure and finally removing the release surface from the coated fabric. In other embodiments the composition may be fully foamed and cured before applying to the fabric which is secured to the coating by a conventional adhesive or the composition may be coated directly on to the fabric. An unfoamed skin coating may be applied to the release surface before the composition is spread on to it. In an example a composition comprising diethylene triamine carbonate and a reaction product of isophorone diisocyanate with a mixture of polypropylene diol, triol and diethylene glycol was used to coat a nylon velour fabric. The composition may be used to coat cotton knitted fabric and other thin fabrics.
