Abstract

1492929 Nitric acid; purifying gases JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO Ltd 24 Oct 1974 [24 Oct 1973 24 July 1974] 49501/73 Heading ClA [Also in Division Bl] Nitric oxide is made by the oxidation of ammonia, oxides of nitrogen are reduced with a gaseous reducing fuel, hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide are oxidized and automobile exhaust gases are purified in the presence of catalysts comprising an extended metal substrate made from a heat and oxidation resistant alloy of Fe containing 3-40 wt. per cent Cr, 1-10 wt. per cent Al, 0-5 wt. per cent Co, 0-72 wt. per cent Ni and 0-0À5 wt. per cent C; a first layer on the extended metal substrate comprising an adherent coating of a refractory oxide and/or a compound containing an oxygen-containing anion; and a catalytic material comprising ore or metals selected from Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt, Ag, Au and alloys containing at least 10 wt. per cent of one of said metals and Bi, Sb or one or more base metals. The alloy of Fe may contain up to 10 wt. per cent of Si, Mn, Zr, Cu, W, V, Mo, Ce, Nb, Ta and/or Ti. The first layer may comprise alumina, silica, titania, zirconia, hafnia, chromia, boria, an oxide of scandium, yttrium or a lanthanide, a chromate, a phosphate, a silicate or a nitrate. The base metal may be Al, Mg, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Re, Co, Ti, V, Cu, Zn, Cd, In, Sn, Pb, a lanthanide, or an actinide. In examples the catalysts are used to purify exhaust gases by the oxidation of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
