Abstract

1492737 Purifying exhaust gases UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 4 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 51981/73 Heading ClA [Also in Divisions B1 and H5] I.C. engine exhaust gases are subjected to purification treatment, e.g. oxidation of carbon monoxide, by contact with a catalyst body comprising a substrate made of ferro-electric material, the surface of which is covered by a catalyst material, e.g. platinum, the catalyst body being pre-heated by passage of an electric current through the substrate, the substrate material having a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity and a Curie temperature point at which the resistivity of the material increases to such a value that the electrical current heats the catalyst body only up to the Curie temperature of the substrate, the temperature of the catalyst body being maintained at or above the Curie temperature by the exhaust gases. Suitably, the substrate has fluid flow paths therethrough, e.g. it is formed from separate spaced sheets or has inter-connecting pores. The substrate material may be a perovskite titanate, e.g. wherein X = R.E (e.g. La), Sb, Y, other trivalent metal or mixtures thereof; Z = Ba, Sr, Pb or mixtures thereof; Q = Nb, Sb, Bi, other pentavalent metal or mixtures thereof; and, y = 0À1. The platinum may be deposited by sputtering and reference is made to Specification 1,455,248.
