Abstract

1490320 Pigments concentrates HERCULES Inc 6 May 1976 [7 May 1975 15 July 1975] 18623/76 Heading C3R A pigment concentrate which may be in pellet form comprises a blend of by weight (a) from 20 to 55% of pigment, (b) from 5 to 35% of a friable dispersing resin selected from (1) thermoplastic hydrocarbon resins having a molecular weight of from 350 to 2000 and a softening point of from 70‹ to 195‹ C. and (2) rosin ester resins having a softening point of from 100‹ to 195‹ C., and (c) from 30 to 65% of a copolyester derived from ethylene glycol, a C 4-10 aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol and a dicarboxylic acid, the copolyester having a melting point of from 140‹ to 200‹ C. The pigment concentrate may be made by forming an aqueous dispersion of the pigment, preferably in the presence of a surfactant, mixing the aqueous pigment dispersion with a solution of the dispersing resin in an organic solvent, flushing the pigment from the aqueous phase to the resin phase and blending the pigment resin phase with the copolyester at above the melting point of the copolyester. The examples describe preparing the above pigment concentrates and using them to colour polyethylene terephthalate.
